There is no problem, if someone prefer that approach, just go for it.  I
find interesting to give the Debian users alternative solutions to the
problems.

I have not tested the HAL/gvm/pmount approach, but I find usbmount very
convenient since the package is amazingly plug-and-play.  Besides,
usbmount is lightweighted:

$ apt-cache show hal gnome-volume-manager pmount | grep Installed-Size
Installed-Size: 504
Installed-Size: 736
Installed-Size: 140
$ apt-cache show usbmount | grep Installed-Size
Installed-Size: 104

Moreover, gnome-volume-manager depends on a whole bunch of Gnome
libraries.
