I discovered that after unzipping the provided link to the stix zip file
into ~/.fonts, running fc-cache -f ~/.fonts
then restarting iceweasal, that mathml webpage showed correctly
In addition to my original message, perhaps a new package for stix
should be requested?

(There's also a wikipediapage about it, and says license for stix is
royalty-free)
