Are you comfortable with shared libraries management? sonames bump, rpath, and so on, triggers something or you don't know what they are? shlibs are not an easy packages to starts with. This doesn't mean to discourage you (we'd be happy to have a caring maintainer for each package), but only to warn you that you'll have to learn the debian packaging method + who to handle shlibs, and that means a lot, and could pose the bar too high.
