pv -petrb someImageFile > /dev/disk/... (Or pipe to sudo dd of=/dev/disk/... if that's better for you, permissionwise.) If pv can't figure out the size of the image file, add "-s 4G". I haven't tried bar, but from the description it looks very similar to pv.
