I do not use the 2.09 compatability mode, but it is my understanding that when "latex" sees "\documentstyle{<foo>}" instead of the 2e "\documentclass[bar,platz,goziamazu]{foo}" construction, it loads the crippled, 2.09 compatable files. I mention this only because you have not detailed the extent of your difficulties, which would be off-topic here. Perhaps I could lend a hand here if you would contact me directly with a URL to where I could find the style file. I do only English, so I may not be of much help.
