It's no problem to split savane up into different packages. Concerning your debian directory, I would suggest to remove it from the savane source code. The reason is that it would be a "Debian-native" package otherwise, which in my opinion does not apply to savane. Again, that's really nitpicking, and it's probably too early to do so.
