Package: wnpp Severity: wishlist * Package name : xvidcore Version : 0.9.2 * URL : http://www.xvid.org/ * License : GPL with non-free addendum (see below) Description : MPEG-4 encoding/decoding library
MPEG-4 encoding/decoding library. Drip (the DVD-to-Divx backup program) needs this in order to produce Xvid .avi files. Before packaging this we need to sort out the license problem: ---------------------------------------------------------------------- XviD is licensed under the terms of the GNU GPL + Link over controlled interface + location restrictions. [...] Under section 8 of the GNU General Public License, the copyright holders of XVID explicitly forbid distribution in the following countries: - Japan - United States of America ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Note: the "Link over controlled nterface" part is an extra permission, not a restriction, hence isn't a problem for us. Whoever wants to package this, should first contact upstream and ask them to drop the export restriction. It's worth noting that most of the free software they're using to develop Xvid actualy comes from the USA. I'd recommend this as an argument to show upstream. -- System Information: Debian Release: testing/unstable APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.4.24-1 Locale: [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- Robert Millan "[..] but the delight and pride of Aule is in the deed of making, and in the thing made, and neither in possession nor in his own mastery; wherefore he gives and hoards not, and is free from care, passing ever on to some new work." -- J.R.R.T., Ainulindale (Silmarillion)
