Please cc me on replies as I am not subscribed to the rendezvous mail list.
While the Debian-legal mail list has concluded after discussion [1] that the APSL 2.0 is not DFSG-free, I believe that the code can be distributed in the non-free section of Debian if a packager steps forward. [2] I see one Debian WNPP [3] Request for Package for mdnsd [4] but the request is not well informed. The WNPP is the system that Debian developers and users use to keep track of software in the process of being prepared for distribution. The mdnsd [5] code is at version 0.7G released Feb 17th, 2003. I believe the WNPP bug 257047 should be closed. I believe new WNPP RFP requests should be filed. The Apple code [6] is available in tarballs [7] and CVS. How best to incorporate this code into the Debian system (3 debian packages?) is a significant exercise for the packager. This will require taking into account the existing system package dependencies, license compatibilities and how best to incorporate the new functionality provided by the Apple code. The code for all 3 .tar.gz files contains about 1 MB of compressed sources that include support for multiple platforms including MacOS 10. I am somewhat surprised that I do not see evidence of additional action taken after the 2002 announcement [8] of the "Open Sourcing" of the Rendezvous code. I have cc'd the author of mdnsd on this message. He maintains the the best website [9] I have seen summarizing open source Rendezvous activity. I would be happy to advise and assist others who are interested in moving Debian packaging of Apple's Rendezvous forward. I would particularly be interested in speaking with appropriate Apple representatives.
