Been working with upstream author (salsaman) for the past couple of weeks where we have discussed how to approach LiVES for Debian, and since mplayer is not actually required at build-time (and run-time), LiVES has been slightly modified to behave better if there is no mplayer available. Of course, without mplayer, LiVES will have a more limited set of features. I will include a README.Debian with the Debian package that explains where to obtain mplayer (and transcode, etc).
