ASCEND is a modelling language and user interface for solving heirarchical systems of nonlinear equations. It's been used for modelling chemical processes, chemical reactions, pipe flow problems, as well a been more generally useful as a quick way to solve 'what if' questions that are too hard for standard spreadsheet solvers to handle. ASCEND is licensed under the GNU GPL. The website is http://ascend.cheme.cmu.edu/ I have been able to produce a basic .deb package for ASCEND that works on Ubuntu; I'm hoping to improve the packaging here and get it up to scratch for ultimate inclusion in Debian. Doing the packaging right will be hard; there are shared libraries and Python and Tcl/Tk dependencies. Help will be most appreciated.
