The disfunctional wifi interface may be an issue of missing firmware.
To work around this, you might want to use an installation image which
includes such firmware files, from
https://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/unofficial/non-free/cd-including-firmware/9.7.0+nonfree/amd64/iso-cd/
