After the kernel built after those commands still had the problem, I did a:

git bisect bad

and rebuilt the kernel, still seeing the problem until I arrived back at commit 541cc966915b6756e54c20eebe60ae957afdb537.

When I did:

git revert 541cc966915b6756e54c20eebe60ae957afdb537

and rebuilt the kernel, I could successfully view the large JPEG file in iceweasel, but the large JPEG would corrupt if another window overlapped it, and refreshing resulted in a black rectangle where the image had been shown.

I am building kernel 2.6.37-git4 and will try it soon.
