dear People: thank you for your reply. In the meantime, I decided to update my broken system, by doing: dpkg --get-selections on a newly updated Debian system that had a working desk top and dpkg --set-selections on on the broken machine . I guess that this forced the instruction " dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xfree86" to be performed. my system is now working and the screen looks good. again, thank you for your reply. sandy basickes
