it appears to be an issue with some post-3.1.0 kernels instead.
Let me guess, cbdd45015af78ec9e75ed7a3df8b76048c4d289f or related radeon
driver de-inlining changes?
Anyway, please make sure to report this against the kernel.
Closing this bug and my problem appeared to be dying hardware... I had
to pull an SB Audigy 2ZS SB 0350 from this machine and use an old SB
Live!5.1 SB 0220 until I can replace it.
