Xprop(1) got a significant overhall a while back. This should work correcly now.
That said, xterm(1) doesn’t do the right thing with such titles in that it stores them on the server as STRING where they ought to be stored as COMPOUND_TEXT for WM_NAME and WM_ICON_NAME and as UTF8_STRING for _NET_WM_NAME and _NET_WM_ICON_NAME (which xterm does not set at all).
