I have had to go back to using

   Option "ExaNoComposite" "true"

in the xorg.conf file. Although the patch you provided does prevent a crash
during initialization, a number of rendering problems remain. Usually, I
can recover the proper appearance of the screen by switching to a text
console with Ctrl+Alt+F1, then switching back to the graphical console with
Alt+F7; but after doing this a number of times, the X server usually crashes.
Clearly there are other rendering problems with EXA not fixed by the patch.
