Ok, found. xlibs-data had not replaced a missing /etc/X11/xkb/keycodes/aliases file. A dpkg re-run with --force-confmiss fixed it. -- The mimefilter script cheerfully takes an unlimited number of command line arguments and happily discards them all. -- (mimefilter man page)
