Please try reverting to the "ati" driver, but leaving "UseFBDev" set to
false.

Does the bug stay gone?

I have tried the four combinations of driver and UseFBDev. Two work, two don't,

In doing so I encoutered a further problem. X uses XF86Config-4 in /etc/X11 but XF86Config in root's home directory. I recommend this be made consistent, I nearly reported I cannot reproduce the problem.

Here's the short story:
Kookaburra:~# egrep -w 'r128|ati|UseFBDev|Fatal' x-test.log
+ egrep 'Driver|UseFBDev' XF86Config
# Driver "ati"
        Driver "r128"
        Option "UseFBDev" "true"
Fatal server error:
+ egrep 'Driver|UseFBDev' XF86Config
        Driver "ati"
# Driver "r128"
        Option "UseFBDev" "true"
Fatal server error:
+ egrep 'Driver|UseFBDev' XF86Config
# Driver "ati"
        Driver "r128"
        Option "UseFBDev" "false"
+ egrep 'Driver|UseFBDev' XF86Config
        Driver "ati"
# Driver "r128"
        Option "UseFBDev" "false"
Kookaburra:~#

I've attached the longer version.
