As I understand it, a device shouldn't send core events if it's not in the server's current layout. I had heard rumors that Linux kernel 2.6 demultiplexes PS/2 mouse devices into /dev/input/mice, and not just USB mouse devices as 2.4 does. It would be useful if someone could let me know which mouse devices Linux 2.6 demuxes in this way. The debconf/dexconf logic can then be updated to behave differently when kernel 2.6 is used. Of course, this can get to be a headache when people switch between 2.4 and 2.6 kernels, leaving them with less-than-optimal XFree86 server configurations. Sigh. -- G.
