Subject: xlibs: xkb and grab with int'l keyboard: mode_switch does not work
To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
X-Mailer: bug 3.2.10
Delivered-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Package: xlibs
Version: 4.1.0-6
Severity: normal

i'm using a german keyboard, which means that @,|,{ etc. are accessed
using the altgr key which maps to mode_switch plus some key.

applications like xscreensaver and quintuple-agent that grab the keyboard
cannot read any of the above mentioned characters.
the symptom is like this: if i'm pressing altgr-q (which should produce
@) just q itself is received by the app.

i've digged into both apps and added ugly printf debugging, and that
is what i detected: there are two events generated, one for the
keypress of altgr and one for q. XLookupString returns no string for
the first event, which is ok as altgr/mode_switch is nonprintable and
just a modifier. unfortunately, XLookupString does then return just q
for the second event, which is wrong.

my xkb setup is absolutely plain, model pc102, layout de,
variant nodeadkeys and options ctrl:nocaps.

all other x apps like xev that do not grab the keyboard work fine.

i've done some research about xkb and known problems with intl keyboards
in a grabbed-keyboard situation, and i came up with this
<URL:http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Bay/2602/uqlx.html#SEC23>,
but i have not digged deeper.

workaround: turn off xkb, and everything behaves correctly again.
solution? i've not digged deep enough to propose some, but IMHO it seems
that this is a low-level problem with xkb itself.

regards
az

Hi,

this old bug seems indeed to have been fixed in xfree86 4.x (tested with
xscreensaver), so I am closing it.
