What command are you using to switch away?
I would use alt-f2 for instance (which doesn't require an enter key).

I've seen a few black screens in the past few months, but they're correlated
with running web browsers (opera for instance).  Sounds mostly like an
X server problem.

The select-timeout is (someone reminded me) from the sessionMgt resource.
It might be related, but not necessarily.
