Package: xserver-xorg Version: 6.9.0.dfsg.1-1 I run Debian unstable.
Applications which do not use modern font display techniques, such as older GTKv1 applications (ie XMMS), Motif or Athena applications, render TrueType fonts very ugly. See this for an example: http://img252.imageshack.us/my.php?image=truetypefontsdebian1xr.png The culprit seems to be the following shared library: /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/fonts/libfreetype.so Replacing it with a libfreetype.so file from a similar (6.8.0) x.org package, compiled from source on a Fedora system, produces the following much improved result: http://img263.imageshack.us/my.php?image=debiantruetypefontsfixed5zr.png The font in both screenshots is the same: Verdana, as is the configuration and application (nedit).
