xserver-xorg-video-ati 1:6.5.8.0-1 in sid contains all the critical fixes. If that doesn't work, it's unlikely that CVS HEAD makes any difference (except that it's incompatible with xserver-xorg-core 1.0). If you're having problems with that, try not enabling the DRI.
