In fine, not sure why the problem did exist, but after installing two more packets (whose version number was in one way looking like xserver to xorg version number), installing a newer version of kde (and its dependencies)
rebooting with 2.6.15 it worked fine. Works fine again with 2.6.16.

Might be related with some boot/hardware/usb detection issue.
