This allows you to run a server within a server; this is occasionally useful for testing new window managers and other X clients. . Xnest relies upon its parent X server for font services. (new) xserver-common_4.3.0.dfsg.1-14sarge2_mips.deb optional x11 files and utilities common to all X servers The X server is the hardware interface of the X Window System. Its job is to communicate with video display and input devices, and present them in a standardized, abstract fashion via the X protocol to X clients (X-based programs). The X server largely relieves programs of having to know or care about the details of the hardware with which they are interacting (such things as 32-bit versus 8-bit color, the layout of the keyboard, how many buttons the mouse has, etc.). The catch is that the X server must itself know the technical specifications of the graphics hardware and monitor, the keyboard layout, the protocol used by the mouse, and so forth. . X servers either need fonts installed on the local host, or need to know of a remote host that provides font services (with xfs, for instance). The former means that font packages are mandatory. (new) xvfb_4.3.0.dfsg.1-14sarge2_mips.deb optional x11 virtual framebuffer X server Xvfb provides an X server that can run on machines with no display hardware and no physical input devices. It emulates a dumb framebuffer using virtual memory. The primary use of this server was intended to be server testing, but other novel uses for it have been found, including testing clients against unusual depths and screen configurations, doing batch processing with Xvfb as a background rendering engine, load testing, as an aid to porting the X server to a new platform, and providing an unobtrusive way to run applications that don't really need an X server but insist on having one anyway. .
