Installing would be enough as long as the package has already been built in the past. From the report, you seem to have an i386 architecture, so it should be easy. The 2.8.2 nsc driver currently in experimental has been built for Etch, it is available from [1] (or from apt-get/aptitude with an "experimental" line in sources.list). It only has one dependency against xserver-xorg-core >= 1.2.0-4, which is available for Etch from [2] and should not cause any problems (1.2 mainly brought cleanup/fixes, the major/risky changes are in 1.3). And this one depends on libdrm >= 2.3 which is available for Etch at [3] and won't break anything.
