Tried without that module as well yes, same problem.

Nope, I can only choose between 1MB and 8MB.
The system is a not too old Intel E6600 with a Gigabyte GA-965G-DS3
motherboard:

Upgrading to xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.1.0-1 solved the problem!

Tried it with both linux-image-2.6.22-rc7-amd64 and
linux-image-2.6.21-2-amd64 and both work.

*) And yes you're right about the modules automatically getting loaded.
i915 gets modprobed like it should.
