The xserver-xorg package asks you for the xkb settings.  If you give it
broken values (it seems that the "dead" variant of the "us" layout
doesn't exist) there's not much we can do about that...
Not sure why there's no warning/error in your X log, though.  Have you
checked the display manager's log?
