The same happens on "my" R50e Thinkpad: The splash-screen of Google Earth is shown normally and at the point where the big window with the 3D view should appear, X crashes (X.Org X Server 1.4.0.90) with the following lines in the Xorg.log:
(EE) DoSwapInterval: cx = 0x86c28e0, GLX screen = 0x8256880 Backtrace: 0: /usr/bin/X(xf86SigHandler+0x7e) [0x80b84be] 1: [0xffffe420] 2: /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions//libglx.so [0xb7b216d7] 3: /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions//libglx.so [0xb7b25ff6] 4: /usr/bin/X [0x814dbfe] 5: /usr/bin/X(Dispatch+0x2bf) [0x808d19f] 6: /usr/bin/X(main+0x48b) [0x80746bb] 7: /lib/i686/cmov/libc.so.6(__libc_start_main+0xe0) [0xb7ca8450] 8: /usr/bin/X(FontFileCompleteXLFD+0x201) [0x8073a31] Fatal server error: Caught signal 11. Server aborting I realized that the kernel-driver (Kernel 2.6.24-1-686) for the 3D acceleration, i915, is not listed by lsmod and therefore glxinfo reports no direct rendering. However, I can load it manually by typing modprobe i915 without problems (I do it within X). After restarting X* Google Earth works without problems and glxinfo reports direct rendering. *restart of X is necessary - Google Earth still crashes after loading the module without doing so. In my opinion, there may be two different problems: (1) X should not crash, even without the loaded kernel module. (2) why is the kernel module i915 not loaded automatically (it is even in /etc/modules)? The attached file contains the Xorg.log of a crashed session. The lines just before the (EE) crash, FreeType: couldn't find encoding 'iso8859-14' for '/var/lib/defoma/x-ttcidfont-conf.d/dirs/TrueType/Andale_Mono.ttf' are from Google Earth but they also appear in sessions where the i915 module is loaded and therefore google earth runs smoothly.
