This is likely a kernel issue. Can you try a newer kernel (2.6.34-rc or so)? Note that will require a new libdrm and xf86-video-nouveau from upstream git, since unfortunately the nouveau ABI changed between in the 2.6.34 development cycle.
I don't mind to compile a new kernel to test but is there a debian way to install the other bits libdrm, xf86-video-nouveau?
