I confirm the issue on my newly configured Debian squeeze box.

Since there is a workaround (uninstall xserver-xorg-video-vmware)
it probably is okay to leave this at normal severity level, but
the unimpeded use of X --configure is quite important these days to
obtain the core of a useful X configuration for a vastly changed X configuration landscape. Therefore, if the workaround were not
available I would have requested classifying this bug at a much
higher severity level.
