IRC doesn't qualify as IM, in popular usage of the word. Here's my try at justifying it: * IRC is more aimed at group conversation, while IM is more aimed at one-to-one conversation. * IRC nickname is not a fixed reference point (NickServ notwithstanding), but IM ID usually is. For example, ICQ number is an identity. * IRC doesn't have buddy list. IM does. * IRC have channels, with topic, op, etc. IM doesn't. Point 3 and 4 can be considered as an elaboration of point 1.
