man tar: f tar uses the next argument as the name of the archive instead of /dev/tape. If the f argument is not given, and $TAPE is set in the environment, then that value is used instead of the default. If the name of the file is `-', tar writes to standard output or reads from standard input (whichever is appropriate). Thus, tar can be used as the head or tail of a filter chain.
En gros si tu ne met pas "-f" il cherchera a faire le tar sur /dev/tape et pas dans un fichier du style "monarchive.tar". Qu'on me corrige si je me trompe ... A+ Pier .
