>> "There is no inherent relationship between either "reverse" (from MAIL, SAML, etc., commands) or "forward" (RCPT) addresses in the SMTP transaction ("envelope") and the addresses in the headers. Receiving systems SHOULD NOT attempt to deduce such relationships and use them to alter the headers of the message for delivery..." Contradicts that. <<
No contradiction - what that means is, that the receiving system should not ALTER the header "To:" or header "From:" and change them to the ENVELOPE headers. But EVERY SMTP server in the process is required to ADD additional headers (such as "received"). The FINAL SMTP server in the process is required to ADD the "Return-Path" header. (Imail does NOT add that header because it stores that information in its Q* file. This alternate storage location of the final envelope from works - but is a violation of RFCs.)
