As some of you may have noticed, the proxies.relays.monkeys.com
anti-spam DNS zone file has been basically empty and devoid of
any content for the past several days. This was by intent. I
have had to deal with some unexpected and urgent family issues
over the past several days and I knew that I would not be present
or able to properly process removal requests for some time, so
I opted to simply empty the zone for the time being in order to
avoid a situation where the owners of formerly open proxies that
had been properly closed would not be able to quickly get their
IP addresses removed.

The issues that called me away from my desk are not entirely re-
solved at the present moment, however with luck they will be so
soon. Regardless of that however, I have decided that it would
be best for me to keep the Monkeys.Com open proxies list down
(with is to say up and running, but empty of any entries) for
approximately the next two weeks in order to allow for some much
needed retooling.

The Monkeys.Com proxies list has been in operation for over eight
months now, and this initial period has allowed me to gain a
very good understanding on how a list like this should be organ-
ized and operated. Unfortunately, the software I have created
to date, e.g. for processing list additions and list removals,
was never very sophisticated in the first place, and has come
to seem even less so now that I've had more experience running
the list. Indeed, the major issue that compelled me to empty
the zone in advance of my recent unplanned absence was the fact
that list removals have never been entirely automated, and the
processing of removal requests has required, and still does re-
quire some amount of manual processing on my part. Obviously,
that isn't good, and this is one of the many aspects of the list-
related software that I intend to fix over the next two weeks or
so.

I apologize sincerely to the many different people and organizations
who have been loyal users and promoters of this free service for
this brief interruption, and for my failure to announce it in
advance. I do understand that this short-term outage will leave
quite a lot of sites and people vulnerable to somewhat higher
levels of spam than they would otherwise receive, but I ask you
all to bear with me while I make some much needed and long over-
due renovations. Thank you all for your patience. Please look
for another announcement here once the Monkeys.Com proxies list
is once again populated and in full operation.

Regards,
rfg
