Here's a follow up, please critique!

This seems like it could do the trick...performing findstr in the 
/imail/spool/overflow directory (or the spool directory depending)

findstr /m somestringhere *.smd > kill.txt

and then manipulating kill.txt into a batch file using ultraedit or the like to insert 
'del' before Q<messageID>.SMD (for the overflow directory) and del D<messageID>.SMD 
(for the corresponding files in the spool directory) and then running each in their 
respective directories?  Klunky, yes, but I'm tired...seems like it should work
