Hi,

I second Matt's comments. I have been using MSDNS for years with no problems on an Imail server that runs 60-80,000 messages a day.

Be certain that you understand DNS well, particularly PTR entries.
Set up primary and secondary DNS servers on other boxes.
Install the MSDNS service on your IMail server box, but do not touch the DNS service.
In your IMail server's network properties, under DNS, enter the IPs of your DNS servers, and those of your upstream provider.
Point Imail's DNS to 127.0.0.1
Disable caching and failed domain skipping in Imail.

If you have the correct DNS settings in your DNS servers, you should have no problems.

If anyone is interested, I have a well-worn script that interprets the boot file from an MSDNS primary and creates a boot file for another MSDNS server that sets it up as a secondary. Once you run this script, you only need to change entries on the primary. You only need to run the script whenever you add or delete a domain.

I've been running on W2k MS DNS with high volume and many lookups for each message and it has performed flawlessly as far as I can tell.

I would suggest turning off the caching of DNS within IMail along with failed domain skipping, and also make sure that there is only one DNS server listed in IMail.

If you are still having issues, it would seem to be something that is broken as opposed to a problem with it's ability to handle the load.

Hey Guys,

What is the best DNS server to run on a W2K box. I was using the Microsoft DNS server but have been running into some problems. I reloaded it now it will not do lookups. My upstream provider will not let me point my Mail server to their DNS servers because of the amount of lookup from Declude. Any help would be apreciated.
