I guess one of the big questions that I would have would be what would happen if I installed on a new server and then imported my registry settings over to it. Where's the unlocked identifier stuff stored? I'm sure there are many other things as well to be concerned about such as what came up around here in the MAC address discussion with Declude and SmarterMail...

<RANT ON>

Anyway, I guess I am kind of insulted that Ipswitch would move to do this after sticking it to us. Based on a conversation that I had with a lawyer friend of mine, he indicated that Ipswitch's first move to stop offering upgrades for IMail for service agreement holders while just simply re-bundling the product was likely indefensible. So where's the key that we can use to keep them from screwing us?

I'm one of those guys that doesn't like to jump through ridiculous hoops to use a piece of software. The only stuff that I don't pay for is stuff that I can't justify spending money on, which means they aren't mission critical or I am just testing stuff out and can't justify purchasing them up front. Excessive protections on such software has a negative effect with people like myself since I will probably not become familiar with such software so they will likely never get my money. It's like shrink-wrapping a book. I think that reasonable protections should be in there such as personally identifiable license keys and even phoning home, but I for instance have no clue as to how to migrate Windows 2003 from one box to another without doing more research, and I would hate to have to do this in an emergency. The same goes for IMail. If everyone was responsible about this stuff I wouldn't be concerned but that clearly isn't the case.

I'm also very much against software and hardware being sold under a non-transferable license. I will avoid such things whenever possible now. If software isn't transferable, it should be sold as a service and not as a piece of software, and hardware should be leased. To give the impression of ownership by calling it otherwise is wrong, and I have my doubts about the legality of some such provisions in boxed EULA's. I was on the phone yesterday with WebTrends where they told me that my copy of their software wasn't legitimate because I wasn't the original owner and they don't transfer licenses...this is the same company that moved from differentiating versions/prices of their software based on functionality to one that was based on the number of profiles that you had configured, to now basing it on the number of page views that their reports generate. They even lock you out of their KB unless you have a support contract with them...Egad! I say let them rot! Although their software is generally very good, like Ipswitch they are getting killed by much lower prices software that is less restrictive, in fact SmarterStats is one of their competitors for a fraction of the price. They won't survive doing business like that. Even Cisco risks/experiences a loss of market share, and when that happens, they will be so deep in the doo-doo that they wouldn't be able to afford to back away from the non-transferable licenses.

There are several methods to software "Licensing" It is cheaper to
actually purchase a third party license system, then to develope your
own.

I'm always interested in the details of protection mechanisms. Not
because I'm a pirate, but becausethose mechansimscan be anunnecessary
interference that can be very painful to work through. And there is no
information in Ipswitch's kb, forums, or general Googling for what
this is.

Ipswitch in particular, but generally also, I do not trust software
enough to go and put upgrades directly ona production server. And
doubly never on a customer-facing server!

Just out of curiosity, what's the issue with eAladdin? Can it cause
problems, or is it just excessive in one way or another?

Thanks,

Matt

I agree, Andy, those features caught my eye too. But so did:

I really want the multithreaded SMTPD, but I'll be waiting a good
while before trying this version. The block connections after x bad
recipients may be enough incentive for me to finally implement Sandy's
Exchange2Aliases!

    Wow ...

this is the FIRST time in very many years that I actually am pleased
what they added.

Does anyone know if the "SPF connection filtering" truly is DURING the
SMTP conversation? If so, will it by bypassed if SMTP AUTH is
used? That alone would receive my message load by about 5%.

Anyway, lots of stuff that I've been waiting for - now the question
is, will I dare to upgrade before 8.2.5 is available <G>. ¢ Secure
Socket Layer for POP, IMAP,SMTP. ¢ SPF - IMail connection
filtering.... ¢ SMTPD is now multi-threaded and has been re-designed
for better performance and stability. ¢ SMTPD can now listen on all IP
addresses or only those configured. ¢ IMail no longer uses Winsock
1.1. All programs now use Winsock 2. ¢ SMTPD can now block connections
after max invalid recipients reached. ¢ SMTPD will close a connection
after the maximum number of invalid recipients have been reached. ¢
Support for additional listen port in SMTPD

A question for Declude...

Has Declude been tested with Imail 8.20?
