I'm posting this to give as much information as possible, not to put the
guys at declude in a bad light. They're doing a great job and we love their
product!

Something either wrong with all 4 of our servers or there's a big problem in
3.x

I've got 4 Dell PE 1650's dual proc. 1.4Ghz machines with 2GB ram each,
Windows 2003 Server Std, SP1.
We run Sophos AV for the OS itself and exclude the entire \imail folder (and
its sub-folders)
All 4 are behind two clustered Foundry Server Iron load balancers.
The load balancer does a round-robin redirect of SMTP traffic
(A,B,C,D,A,B,C,D).
We do about 400,000 messages a day which means about 100,000 per server in
Imail Gateway mode only.
The only services we run on Imail are Monitor, SMTP, and QueueMgr.

one AV scanner (fProt -- on demand not installed).
Message sniffer
Spamchk
Various filters

We've been running declude for 3-4 years with no problems.
In 2.06 we ran MAXPROCESSES at 30 and could process about 1000 messages in
the spool folder in less than 4 mins.

About a month ago we went to 3.x and suffered from lots of decludeproc
crashes.
Started at maxthreads at 30 -- CPU ran constantly at 100%.
We finally had to drop to maxthreads 15 to get a good "spike" pattern.

Working with declude (which by the way are always helpful) we tried to
isolate the problem.
Removed the AV scanner, removed all externals, etc.
Decludeproc still crashed.
We thought it was specific messages but after testing we would move the
messages in the \review folder back to the \proc folder and decludeproc
would NOT crash.

Anyway, we had to go back to 2.6.11 the other day. Too many crashes and
delays in mail delivery.
When decludeproc would crash, Imail SMTP would continue to deliver, the proc
folder would build up causing a massive queue backup.
Too many users complained so we reverted. The servers are back to normal
FAST delivery.

I should also point out that when 3.0 would run (between the crashes) it
didn't keep up with the load that 2.6 could. In other words, if we would put
1000 messages in the \spool folder in 2.6 we could process them in about 3
mins. In 3.0 1000 messages in the \proc folder would take more like 8 mins
to clear out.
