Hey all this is off topic but wonder what you all thought of this. I got
into a technical argument with a friend of mine over the need of a www
cname record in DNS. No matter what explanation I give he tells me I am
wrong to have it listed. Comments?
How exactly is it set up? Does www.example.com have a CNAME pointing to hostname.example.com, which has an A record (so you can have a different hostname for the machine other than "www")? Or does www.example.com have a CNAME pointing to example.com (which then has an A record, so people can go to "www.example.com" or "example.com")?

Just so long as it is set up properly and you know any potential consequences, CNAME are fine. The problem is that a lot of people don't use them properly (which can break the DNS, and causing disruption to service to your domain), or they are used in a way that will slow down DNS lookups (such as www.example.org having a CNAME pointing to www.example.com, which would cause an extra DNS lookup).

Many people have their own opinion as to which way is better (my preference in no CNAME), but there isn't one right way.
