I have tried to educate myself about Delphi 2's compiler directives.
There aren't too many and I have tinkered with the ones that seem
promising, but this doesn't change my results.

I am glad to hear that. When I picked up D2 as a student at a good
price to play with a few years ago, I must admit I just didn't have
the patience with it at the time. Recently, my interest in
computer-based mathematics has been reactivated, and I have returned
to it and find it much more response to my efforts. It hasn't changed,
but I guess I have matured a bit. I am very pleased to learn that it
still has its utility--indeed, I am delighted to see that I can
produce little programs that perform gorgeously under windows XP, even
though the compiler itself is Windows 95 era. I am delighted to see
this group exists, and that, in a C dominated world people still have
an interest in Delphi and Pascal programming.
Thank you for your thoughtful feedback to my question. You don't need
to worry about not directly answering the question--I am coming to
accept that there just may not be a simple answer--sort of a Bermuda
triangle mystery.
best,
Les
