kylecordes.com has presented the "BDE Alternatives Guide" for as long 
as I can remember.
If you click on the link labelled "The List" you will find (among many 
other things) a product called ODBCExpress that appears to be a set of 
Delphi components designed to work directly to ODBC drivers, thus 
stepping over the need for ADO. But it's not free.
