I'd never noticed it before, but there IS "fixed size font" option 
visible on the right-hand side of the delphi-en online Web page.
When used, all indents are preserved in the message being viewed.
(I suppose there may also be a plain-text email setting, but that's a 
different matter.)

Which is fine for those who know about it. But as someone who posts a 
bit of code from time to time, most likely the intended reader of the 
code does not have the fixed size setting on, or does not know about it.
So the only thing a poster can do to ensure their code is readable is 
to left-pad with ~ characters. These can easily be removed in the IDE 
by doing a global search-and-replace, replacing the "~" with a space.
