Arsen, In addition to the already-mentioned Firebird SQL RDBMS, you might think of the commercial Oracle database, which is available free for developers (but it is not free if you release anything). Some advantages of Firebird: o Very small footprint: only a few megabytes for client and server installation, a breeze to install o Single database file, making it easy to back up or transmit data o Free and open-source, though tools and visual component library might cost a bit, unless you use native Delphi Interbase VCL o Very flexible: easy to extend with user-defined functions written in you preferred language o Unix and Windows servers are available Only disadvantage I've experienced is that it has fewer monitoring and maintenance tools than some commercial RDBMS.
As others also mentioned, avoid Access if more than one user is contemplated, and P'dox is not well supported (you wouldn't want to install old BDE, if you could avoid it). So why suggest Oracle, then? It is a well known product, and experience with it can carry over to employment opportunities. It is also capable of handling huge amounts of data and has every bell and whistle you might want. Installation packages run to a gigabyte, or so (do not try downloading it over a 56 kb/s modem :-).
