Just as I was advised, it all depends upon your particular user base
and how far you're ready to extend yourself and your time into learning
about Vista.
In my case, the few clients I have left have all upgraded to
Vista...why I can't say for sure...but I believe a big part of the reason is
due to Microsoft's propaganda! And as you would expect, I was inundated
with phone calls asking me how to solve the many installation and UAC
problems they suddenly had to deal with.
The unfortunate thing for them, is that it ended up costing a lot
more in both money and time just to get themselves back up and running again
because so many business apps they're using have not yet been made
compatible with Vista, OR they had to upgrade, literally re-buying the same
or same type of application again within the same year!
I was able to help a little, but even I am mystified by much of what
Vista does and how it works. It'll be a while yet before I feel comfortable
with using it myself! Mostly I tell them to turn UAC off, as none of them
have user security problems to begin with, and I've found that UAC not only
slows things down, as does indexing and the auto-compression services, but
also prevents or screws up many applications.
I upgraded to D2007 at the same time I upgraded to Vista, and though
I am having problems with a few libraries I put together over the years, for
the most part D2007 is compatible with Vista, as are the Raize, Jedi, and
TMS component packages I use the most. Also despite warnings that I
shouldn't, I did install XP Office Professional on Vista because I don't
like spending money just to have the apps I use look different! Luckily
though, the ONLY problem I've had with the Suite is with OutLook...which I
believe is the 2003 version. With it, I must enter my password after
clicking the Send/Receive button, and then after the dialog disappears, I
must click the button a second time. I must repeat this every time I
re-open it even within the same session. But that's STILL not half as bad
as Microsoft Mail that comes with Vista is! <g> And I also had a problem
when I was allowing updates to be automatically downloaded and installed
onto Vista. It has a problem with version control and attempted to install
the XP Pro Service Pack 2 After it had already installed Service Pack 3!

Subject: Vista or XP?

Hi folks --

I'm probably going to be getting a new machine within the next couple weeks,

which will come with Vista pre-loaded. The main app I use which might be
troublesome is, you guessed it, Delphi (BDS 2006). I just want to get up and

running as quickly and easily as possible. So, which do you think would be
an easier & smoother way to get going:
(1) install BDS 2006 (and updates) on Vista, or
(2) install XP to dual boot with Vista, then put BDS on the XP partition?

Thanks, as always -- Al
