If ever a good monthly mag or e-zine on Pascal and Delphi was
needed, it is certainly now! The proliferation of .NET has made it even
harder to find good information on these topics then it had been...and it
was never easy!
.NET is all right, and I'm sure Microsoft will eventually make it
the mandatory infrastructure for writing programs aimed at their operating
systems no matter the language, but for those of us who program mainly as a
creative outlet, it doesn't seem to offer the same personal benefits as
Delphi and Win32 offer! At least for me, even though I use Pascal with .NET
anyway, the ways and means of writing code seems diminished and unequal in
the freedom of expression it offers...making me feel more like a common
bricklayer than a real mason!
So when I saw the announcement about Blaise, I couldn't wait to
check it out. With the demise of "The Delphi Magazine" there really wasn't
any source for articles written by current and highly professional coders to
be found, but luckily for us, Blaise has begun to pickup where The Delphi
mag left off!
Even though I've been lucky enough to have done a few commercial
projects since launching my very first compiler, ( Delphi 2 ), like so many
others, I don't have direct access to other "real" programmers from whom I
can learn all the many tools and tricks of writing good code. And also not
having had any training, I've had to depend on advise from those of you
willing to respond to questions here, and whatever books I've been able to
afford. So a resource like Blaise is very welcome because not only does it
provide articles that represent real-world problems and how a programmer has
solved them by example, but it also gives one an often needed kick in the
ass by examining areas of code writing that you might never otherwise have
the opportunity to learn about, and which therefore stir the creative
juices.
I was very impressed with the straight-forward articles and editing
of the first issue, and more than that I was equally amazed by the relevance
to actual, and practical needs each article displayed, as well as the fact
that all were well within the reach of programmers of all levels. Before I
realized it I had actually consumed the entire issue from cover to cover
without taking a break or losing interest in any of its topics! And two of
the articles were even of particular interest to me because I just happen to
be working on a project now for which they were both very relevant! That
doesn't happen very often, and I don't believe in coincidence!
