Another source you could try is Steve Gibson at Gibson Research.
(http://www.grc.com/). If you can remember, Gibson Research
wrote SpinRite and other "hardcore" hard-disk utilities.
Steve has written several utilities for detecting "bad" ZIP drives,
and I'm sure he'll have some info about detecting ZIP drives.
