VCR-like metaphor for buttons work for me.  2 buttons, the right pointing
button to start and the square block to stop.  You will find that a number
of software packages use this, Delphi is one of them.

Better to take up real estate than to present a UI that is obscure.  In
fact, UI that has appropriate amount of white space is very pleasing to look
at and make the form look less busy.

Now, if you are willing to spare more real estate, an extra indicator to
show the status of the process would be ideal (eg., traffic lights).
