If you read the right RFC (822?) you would be surprised at what is
technically legal for a email address - you can even include comments and
alias names etc (if my memory serves me right) - I wonder how many SMTP
servers/clients would accept some of those variations, and that xmr3 address
is technically legal. 

So much for software following an RFC ...
