Even calibrating an LCD can make a huge difference. I bought a Spyder calibrator a couple of months back for calibrating my Dell 17" LCD (would like to get a good quality 24" widescreen at some stage...) for photographic work (just hobby stuff), and was staggered at the difference calibrating it made to the display.
